Lake Titicaca is a phenomenal body of water that finds its home bordering Bolivia and Peru. It is also the largest lake located in South America.
This unique lake quenches its thirst by drinking the melted glacier water and rainfall. There are 5 main rivers and 20 small streams that empty directly into Lake Titicaca and the water wraps itself around 41 islands. The lake's names has been translated to mean “Rock Puma” because it resembles a puma hunting a small rabbit from an aerial view.
This amazing lake has a large population of people living on its housed islands that go by the name of Uros. These artificial islands in this lake have attracted many tourists for Peru and many of the islands contain watchtowers constructed by reeds.
Another island in Lake Titicaca is Amantani. There are 6 villages and roughly 800 families that live here. The island is gorgeous with two mountain peaks and hillsides that rise from the lake are used to harvest potatoes, wheat and vegetables. Long fences made of stone divide the fields, sheep and cattle between the families. The island has no hotels or cars and although they had power ran by a generator at one point, it is no longer used and not missed. Most homes here are equipped with solar windows They have a few small stores that carry essentials, a health clinic, a school and the most amazing, loving people you will find anywhere. Many families on the island open their homes to tourists that want to visit and learn about the history and guests generally bring staple items like rice, sugar and cooking oil for payment. The residents are more than willing to show you anything you want to see on this island.
Isla del Sol is Lake Titicaca largest island. It is a very rocky and hilly island with no paved roads. Like Amanatani, there are around 800 families residing here and the island houses over 180 ruins dating back to the 15th century. The Incas believed the sun god was born here. Other islands mention worthy in this giant lake are Taquili, Isla de la Luna and Suriqui.
Lake Titicaca is sacred where the Incas religion and old mythology are involved. You can take a boat to many of the islands here and visit sacred rocks and tour old ruins. The water is beautiful but it is freezing so do not plan on doing any swimming here but every island will offer you more history then the last. The lake offers many tours and most visitors will stay in a town called Puno on the edge of the water when visiting. The busy season here is June until September and you may have a hard time getting a hotel during this time so book your visit far in advance.
If you are looking to tour a few fascinating, geographical locations with amazing mythological history, then taking a tour through Lake Titicaca will be happy to accommodate you.
