One of the reasons Peru is a popular tourist destination is because of its thermal springs. Thermal waters have temperatures that can go as high as 98C and are rich in minerals which is the primary reason they are sought for their therapeutic properties.
There are about 400 known thermal sources spot in Peru but only some are open to tourists. Some of the more popular hot spring places are:
Aguas Calientes (literally meaning “hot waters” in Spanish) is located on the Urubamba River and is known as the closest access point to Machu Picchu. The natural hot baths are located in a narrow valley between two mountains and is a relaxing stop for Inca Trail trekkers as well as Machu Picchu visitors.

Historical Cajamarca which is located in the North Eastern Andes of Peru is renowned for the Thermal Baths of the Incas. Said to have amazing healing properties, these thermal waters with temperatures ranging from 67 to 76C have been enjoyed by the Incas since the ancient times.
The Yura waters in Arequipa reaches a temperature reading of 26C on the average. Aguas de Jesus are hypothermal waters whose chemical composition make them ideal for relieving conditions such as arthritis. They are also reputed to be beneficial for other health problems such as dermatitis, kidney stones, cystitis and liver cirrhosis.
More hot spring pools can be found in Monterrey where waters are at an average temperature of 49C and are recommended for rheumatic and nervous conditions; the Chancos hot springs at the foot of the Copa glacier; and the Quercos hot baths which are touted to be good for skin and joint diseases.
